15. Wet ones Dry and WET days DF’ing -
Wet Denim. Salisbury usually run their events in HIGH Summer, however, due to the vagaries of British weather, this is sometimes the wettest time of the year. The start for the event up on the hills North of the city, was a bit damp and miserable, but not sheeting it down, so bearings could be taken without getting drowned. Chris Plummers experiences came later. Wiltshire and Dorset tend to contain large blank areas, like Salisbury Plain, and also large woods with little access. The weather then deteriorated to drenching rain, and competitors got out of their cars just long enough to get a bearing, but not get totally soaked.
It was some time later that Chris decided that it was time to take to foot mode, and clad in his usual protective gear (protection from thorns only) Denim bomber jacket and jeans, he set off through the drizzle. When he arrived , seemingly hours later, as he had got slower as the rain penetrated further into his clothing, he could hardly see as has hat and glasses were by now running in water. He found the TX , more by feel that sight, then had to start the return trek to his car. By this time he was totally soaked, and had to change all his clothes before continuing. The denim etc. Was left on the car floor pan for the afternoon and the journey home, so it had drained if not dried to some extent. Chris decided to weigh the lot and bung them in for wash/drying. When he weighed the dry clothes, there was a 15lb. Difference wet/ dry, ever likely he was so kn*****ed...
